sounds are bit like a tv show, but it's not.

I have a vague memory of being able to blow these up, in TR4, by get to the side so you can shoot the tank. with an explossive arrow.

I don't seem to be able to do that in the LE.

Those guns will shoot at you after they "spot" you.

To destroy them, you have to shoot, from the rear, the canister of gaz at the rear (the one with the red patch on it) using the revolver with the sight.
