I have come across a problem with loading textures into the editor, when I try to load the SLINK set,I only get 5 or 6 textures and the rest appear black. This can't be a memory issue as other sets are far larger and some of them are also missing textures which are there when viewed in a paint program. Can anyone help?

The problem is due to the transparent color. I've seen this in several of the new texture sets. If there is a full 64x64 block that is only this color, then the editor will not read past it. When you're in your paint program, find the offending blocks and fill them in with whatever color you wish other than the transparent color and you shouldn't have any more problems.

Yes, if any squares on the texture file containt the background transparent color, no textures will appear after that square. Use the fill tool and simply fill those squares in with any color or use those spaces for new texture tiles. Make sure you save as 24 bit.
