Hi moose,

1) Have you tried installing your copy of TRLE on another computer to see if the CD burn is corrupt?

This will test whether the TRLE software is at fault.

2) Have you tried re-installing your operating system and installing ONLY the TRLE to see if it works?

This will test whether the hardware is at fault (or whether an external app is causing conflicts).

If you do both of these initial tests it will then be possible for us to narrow it down until we find the source of the problem.

Let me know if you decide to try this approach and what the results are.

WBM

Hi moose,

Driber (being an expert in these matters) has probably already covered most, if not all of these questions, but if you want me to try to help you to fix this, please give me the answer to each of the following:

1) Have you installed the TRLE to the C drive (the path must be: C:\Program Files\Core Design\trle)?

2) Have you switched off (exited) EVERY SINGLE background application (including Task Scheduler and any CD Writer CD recognition software)? In your System Tray (bottom right of Task Bar) - the only icons you should see are: Task Scheduler (paused), and Volume control. If you have any other icons here that can't be exited please tell me what they are.

3) Is your DirectX Version: DirectX 8.1 (4.08.01.0881)? If not, install this upgrade, then, find and run the "dxDiag" utility (usually in C:Windows/System Folder). On the first tab that says "System" click "Save All Information" to desktop and open the resulting text file. Paste the contents of it in a reply to this post. The info contained in this file will help us to see if it is a hardware or driver issue.

Also to be noted, if you have upgraded to the latest video drivers you must also ensure that you have the latest DirectX drivers, as the video drivers are most certainly going to be optimised to use these, and would cause problems without them.

Ok I can say that when i ctrl+alt+del I have only systray and explorer left (without crashing my machine....again).

So I dunno what that could mean cos from your reply, WBM it seems you suggested anything that was left open could be the reason? Right? Well only systray and explorer were there.

Oh, and I have Dirext X 8.0a.....I downloaded that and I couldn't open the room editor. But before that, levels would crash on loading...so thats why i got the dx8 download....

What happened was we went to put a dvd in our dvd-rom drive and it said we needed a codec and ati.com had the right one....so we downloaded then it wouldn't play levels, so we downloaded dx8, then room edit failed....

Did the Level Editor work BEFORE you added the DVD codec?

WBM my trle went screwy before the codec was installed my sister informs me...so if that helps in anyway....

OH and when I tried that dxdiag it crashed my pc to a blue screen with an error on it and wouldn't let me type in any of these fields on the forum....my pc went real slow then....and then i turned it off and it was back to normal again......

dj or reecez in the chatbox suggested installing windows 98 again.....only problem being that i thought all my files would be removed. but they said they wouldn't?

I am to say the least....oh and thankyou for your help so far and MERRY CHRISTMAS

Hi moose,

Merry Christmas to you too.

It sounds like you have a very unhappy machine.. but if TRLE worked once upon a time then it is fixable.

1) First of all run ScanDisk on all hard drives.

2) Then, run Disk Defragmenter on all hard drives.

3) Reboot.

4) Install DirectX 8.1 because 8.0a is unstable and was only meant to be a temporary fix to version 8.0.

5) After you have installed DirectX 8.1 try to run dxdiag again and let us know what happens.

You could try setting your screen resolution to 1024x768, like the manual says.

Hi moose,

Your drivers are all up to date, you've installed the latest DirectX. Now:

1) Re-install TRLE and re-boot.

2) If that doesn't work try using the alternative (more up to date) graphics driver for your card: http://support.ati.com/drivers/win98/win98_4122632.html

3) If that doesn't work, un-install programs that your sister is NOT using. The best way to do this is to un-install programs one at a time, re-boot, then check to see if TRLE has started working again. This way you'll know which program is causing the TRLE to crash.

4) If that doesn't work then you have two options:

a) Run TRLE on a separate 'clean' machine (no DVD, CD-writers, or unnecessary programs etc).

b) Re-install Windows..

Personally, I would get a separate machine because I don't like mixing important programs like TRLE with things like word processors and email. Ideally, the machine that you do creative work on should be protected (not connected to the Internet and not shared with any other users). TRLE is an old program so it can be run on an old machine (this means that you wouldn't have to pay much).

Learning how to re-install Windows 98 is a valuable experience but not one that I would like to have whilst sharing the computer with someone else. You need to be able to be allowed to make lots of mistakes without the added stress of having screaming family members pummelling your head with their fists.

oh well something happened today!!!

my roomedit opened but it crashed, which is more than it used to do - at least i saw the room edit window instead of a silly message - but tr4.exe is still mangled....

but that dx8.1 must have helped in some way cos i could see the room editor for like a second!
