I have finally got a wolf in my level (thanks to Kingspyder!) which works great, the only thing is I would prefer to have the original wolf "howl" from TR1. I have taken the sound I want from TR1, converted it to PCM 22050 HZ 16 bit mono (same as all the other sounds in the Sounds/Samples folder), overwritten the dog-hwl sound with the TR1 sound - and the game crashes every time I start the level. What's going on there then?

Any help much appreciated!

use sound forge 4 or 5 to convert in that format. It seems that it is not only the format which is important for the successful importing of new smaples, but even the use of this program. Infact if you search for info in the samples forlder most of the audios were done with SF 4.0 and the same file worked to me only after I re-saved it with SF 5.0 without any other actual difference.

Thanks for replying Psiko - I managed to track down a free demo of sound forge but when I went to download it, it took forever, 20 mins just to download 2%, so I gave up. I suppose that's the only one that will work to get the sounds right?

Try other programs you have that do sound conversion, you might find one that TRLE accepts. The same thing happened to me when I tried to put my own wav file into audio folder, I used the right format, but TRLE wouldn't play. I tried 3 other programs until it works, and that came from a video editor program!

I've tried the exact same thing with the same wolf from KyngSpyder with exactly the same results as you.
I tried with the wav converted to 8 bit mono instead of 16 bit and it works as such, but it doesn't sound right.
It sounds too loud and too gruff.
I'm gonna try and mess with the sounds.txt and see if i come up with anything.
I think there's gotta be a way for it to work in 16 bit though...i'll let you know if i get it to work.

The whole problem boils down to this:

Don't use the Windows Audio Recorder. Use any decent audio programme, Cooledit, Goldwave, Sound Forge, whatever; doesn't matter as long as it isn't the Windows Audio Recorder.

As Psiko says, simply opening the file in question in a programme of your choice and then saving it should do the trick.

Thanx mulf
After messing about with windows sound recorder and getting nowhere i tried Goldwave and it works perefect.

SW, if you want Goldwave get it from:
www.goldwave.com

If you want the howl to sound the same as in TR1 you need to edit the sounds.txt.

Find the line DOG_HOWL ,and where it says PIT-30, change the 30 to 05 to get the right pitch.

Thanks everyone for replying - I am downloading Goldwave now Skisby and thanks also for the tip on changing the sound.txt file, I thought I would need to change something in that. Yes, Mulf I did use the Sound Recorder in the first place so that's probably where all the problems started.
