Hi everyone,

The level I just created crashes evrytime I try to load it. I did all the necessary changes to the script and english texts, created a new tom file and converted it... (and yes, I have a Lara in game) but, when I load the game, the purple loading bar doesn't get to the end, because the screen crashes back to desktop. I thought it was because of the custom wad so I deleted some "heavy" objects, but the problem remains. Could it be that I reached the limits of the TRplayer capacities? I tried also to split the level into two but only one part loaded and played good. The second part crashed also. Can anybody tell what are the limits (number of rooms, textures, objects...) and please HELP!!!
Thanks
JB

If a level does not complete on loading, then it is almost certainly a script error.

Let's say it's a script error. So what do I do wrong? I renamed the level in both script and english files. I changed the data directory (which .tr4 to use) in the script... I output the wad and converted the tom as the same data directory. The only thing I can think about is that I used some objects from ripped tr4 levels (temple of Horus, and other levels from tr4) and I don't know the strange codes I have to write in the script in front of their names. Just an example:
- puzzle, 1,stone of Maat, $xxx $xxx ...
How can I know the codes and what do they mean. And also, are they so important? DO you think that can cause the level to stop loading?
Help!!!!!!

The numbers after a puzzle are important for the rotation in the inventory. If you only use TR4 puzzles and keys, then search the puzzles you use in the original script and use these numbers. If you use other puzzle items try the numbers from different TR4 puzzles and choose the best. You always need the numbers in the script, but I think that's not the reason for the crash.

You changed the data directory for the level?
It still says Level=DATA\... doesn't it? If not, that is probably what is crashing it.

To Malte, thanks for the explanation of object's code! I didn't know!
To Aktrekker, yes, the data directory is correct, I didn't delete anything but just replaced the name of the TR4 file.
So, it makes me think that the script is correct. The problem must come from the model itself. Could it be that I excedeed the memory limitations of the TR4 engine to play the game correctly? In my level. I have huge open spaces made of many stacked rooms, some with water, some with flipmaps, and some with quite a few "heavy" objects! But when I output the wad, everything is ok. It is just when I load it with TR4 player that it crashes.
Any idea or suggestions? Has it happened to anybody else?

By the way, would TRFix be of any help to detect eventual errors or overmemory probs?

In my experience, as Data suggests too, the loading bar not reaching the end is an indicator of Script problems. Post a copy of the contents of both the English and Script file so that we can take a look at them.

I once also had this and it was a broken object in the wad file.
I needed to rebuild the full wad and then it worked.

OK, rebuilding the wad didn't help! The game's still crashing when loading. And seriously, I don't see where I do wrong in the script. I cannot be sure of the load camera coordinates, of course, because I cannot check them in game but at least, the room listed in the coordinates does exist.
WBM, I will send you by e-mail a copy of my script and English files so you can have a look at them.
Please, if anybody wants to help, I can send also copy of the wad, etc...

COPY OF EMAIL SENT TO YOU:

Hi JB,

I ran your script and it worked on my machine so now you know that it is not the script.

The next thing to look at is the project file and the WAD.

TEST 1
Make a new project file which has one room with only Lara and a light in it. Quickly texture the room with any texture. Output the WAD and convert the level.

If it runs then you know that it is your project file that is the problem. Overlapping rooms is the most common error - but you will have to decide whether to rebuild the level or delete rooms one at a time, output and convert, to see which room is causing the problem.

TEST 2
Use the project file with one room again. Load the tut1 WAD and TGA supplied by Core. Output and convert. If it runs then you know that your WAD file is the problem. If so, you will need to rebuild it using TRWest and 'clean' WAD such tut1 as your WAD to edit. (TRWest causes a bug if you edit custom WADs - it must be an original Core WAD that you move your objects into).

Hope this works.

By the way, I changed your English.txt file (see below) to make it easier for you to see what your level names are. This change doesn't affect the tests - it just makes it easier for to see what levels you have named.

If you need to ask any questions about the above it's no problem - I'm happy to help.

WBM
