Iam in the middle of creating a scary level but the probelm is that "IT ISN'T SCARY!" Give me a few suggestions to make it scary. What kind of place is it set in? Caves, Tomb Etc...? I can't decide, I got a really cool soundtrack as well that would make you poo your pants!

Make a dark underground maze and put a big scorpion in it. Trigger the scorpion together with some scary music. This will extremely up the scary rating in your level.

I think that'd be more frustrating than scary, okay, I use this method in my level too, but the maze is just an 'alternate way' of completing a puzzle if you missed an easier way to complete it in my level. But never mind that.

About making it scary, remember which parts in TR or any other game seemed scary and why, in that way analysing the situations, you may get to a very original way to make your level scary.

About the enviroments, what do you think is better than a castle, or a haunted mansion for a scary envirmoent? There have been, are, and will be more than enough tombs, so think about making it a tomb. If you make a level, Firstly you make it for yourself, and only then for the players, so think what would you like to see in a level, and I think you'll make a really good one then.

(ps, don't make me poo my pants, this is the only pair i have)

Well, I think the lighting and the music make a level scary. It's like.... if you watch a horror movie with the sound turned off, it's almost funny or laughable, but if you watch it with sound, then it CAN be scary (although this type of film has to scare me yet ).

And also notice when there is a beast in a movie, they don't show it to you in broad daylight, you always get to see it in the dark! So make your level gloomy.

There is another bit (but don't know if you can do this with TRLE): it's far more scarier when you don't get to see the baddy, then when you do. If you don't see the baddy, your mind will take control and will visualise a beast that has all the characteristics that YOU find scary. So it will be worst than a beast shown by the creator.

Good luck!

Why impossible, Collin? There are a lot of different sound effects, like footsteps, wolf howls and stuff like that that you can use as an audiofile and trigger in the level long before you see the beast itself.

If you wish to see what scary really is, I can promise that you will definitely need an extra pair of underwear when you search the dungeons of Castle Doomsday 2.

If you want to create a scary atmosphere, 'the element of surprise' will work every time.

Hmmm, maybe I shouldn't say anything, but I think it just might be able to make an invisible enemy. I had an idea for something like that, and if the info we have is correct, it would be possible. Now my idea is expanding. The scary idea......an enemy you can't see.....or an enemy you can't identify.....or both......hehe
Maybe it's time to break out the hex editor and try a few things with wad files....

I believe you are too late, I have already such an enemy that will appear or not appear in Doomsday 2.

You need to retexture the baddies or add some scary music. Make it like the game Blood 2: The Chosen. It was very scary, bathtubs filled with blood, freaky industrial track, Mutants with claws.

The TR4 engine doesn't do a good job of making a level scary. It doesn't look much for the imagination.

Data, you mean an enemy that is invisible only sometimes? Guess I'm not the only person to figure it out.
But I have another idea.......maybe it's too mean.

Yes it is too mean, when I played Return to Jazimiya an invinsible horseman attacked me, and I didn't knew where to shoot, because I didn't see it
Semi-transparrent is more advicable, cause it looks more ghostly IMHO

From the TRLE manual:
To create the ‘magical’ crossbow pick-up, place two opposing crossbows; enter 256 in the object code bit window for the crossbow in the main room. It will be invisible but Lara can position herself to pick it up by looking in the mirror.

I don't know if this works for all objects, but you can try. Also in the OCB window there is a 'invisible' button, but I think the object is only invisible until triggered.

Hey, I'm just a rookie, so whatever you do with this advice, is whatever you do with this advice.

TR games are not "horror, need new pair of underwear" scary. It's more like "im going to get eaten by a shark, so i better swim like hell" scary. That's not the kind of atmosphere you are trying to create, right?

True horror would be like Resident Evil. Where the little noise or thing scares you. And you are scared to death to go into the next room or scared to death just standing there.

I made a level which was INTENDED to be scary, by making the player relying on torches and flares. The rest of the level is dark, so if you run out of flares ...

Anyway, go to www.gamingforce.com
They got a lot of mp3s from Silent Hill2 ... in case you need more.

Re-texture a horseman completely transparently except for the axe (give it a bloody edge and wooden handle) and make the eyes bright red w/white/orange centers. Add a near-pitch black room and you have one helluva scary encounter.
